Using Nextcloud for Privacy – Your own Cloud Storage, Shared Contacts and Calendar

I will be introducing you to NextCloud, an open-source cloud based platform for storing files and photos, collaborating, sharing contacts and calendars and even group messaging within your server group. This is a solution meant to replace the privacy stealing cloud options like Google Docs, Google Drive, Google Photos, Microsoft OneDrive, Apple iCloud, Dropbox and so on.

Have your own personal cloud storage that keeps your data safe from prying eyes whose intent is financially benefit from your personal information.

In this video, I will explain what NextCloud does. I will show you what it looks like on Android, IOS, and Windows. And then later in the video, we will actually set up a Nextcloud server using Linode as the cloud provider.

You can power up your Nextcloud, Plex, Jitsi and other servers with Linode. Linode is the largest independent Cloud Computing provider. They’ve been around since 2003, 3 years before AWS. Use the link below for a $100 60-day credit to your new Linode account.

  1. Since you recommend Next Cloud I contacted them, twice, still no response. They are so private that they seem impossible to sign up to. I think I will look for a more user friendly company.

  2. Nextcloud is great if you are going to self-host your own server, but if you are planning to pay a company/provider to do it for you, just DONT. I got scammed by Webo Hosting and QloudData after I paid them for extra storage space subscription. Too glad I used PayPal and I managed to get my money back after they refused to reply.

  3. Ahhhh the moment you mentioned LBRY i HAD TO switch! kudos for being on that amazing platform!

  4. The problem with Nextcloud is that it is not encrypted and many of the features are available with most cloud providers. It can be a lot of work and most people are not cut out to do this.

  5. well, you did manage to put up some graphics but apparently you think what we need most is to see YOU not NextCloud. Best of luck with that buddy.

  6. Sir – perhaps a few SNAP SHOTS of the uses as you describe them would help make listening to the recitation of functions more enduring. I don't want to skip anything important but its almost 1/3 of the video and you are still rambling …. getting sleepy at this point because there isn't anything USEFUL TO DO YET.

  7. i use nextcloud to keep my documents, music, and pictures in sync between the different laptops and computers at home. Works well with real life save backups.

  8. Research GangStalking, you will know what privacy violation and cyber stalking and harassment really is.

It comes in a form of collaboration for some youtube creators. You are asked to incorporate certain words or phrases into your videos.
Doing this you harass people and you become a domestic terrorist. Be careful whom you collaborate with.

  9. owncloud's mobile app requires you to pay the app and only offers less features and its very buggy compared to nextcloud app.

  10. I love your videos, but the background sound effects @ 19" are very distracting and downright annoying. We have to listen to this as we are processing all of the great info that you are sharing. Removing it would be greatly appreciated by your fans and new viewers.

  11. I have used Nextcloud, but I moved to Seafile about 2 years ago. The main reason is the way that Seafile syncs file changes. It does not need to sync the entire file when just making a small change. It sends a "delta" and then the server applied the delta change to the cloud copy. This is VERY efficient and much faster.

I have not revisited Nextcloud recently, so maybe they have improved this already. But Seafile is quite good and there is a Windows and mobile app.

  12. I have setup nextcloud for my clients and they love it. Most other people are so used to Microsoft they can't see other options as viable. Controlling your own data is important. We need to get away from the large data silos to protect our privacy. Thanks for sharing.

  13. Nextcloud providers have plenty of insider bugs that make you an easy target as opposed to other cloud providers. You are better off encrypting your data folders and using a reliable provider. Better yet – host your own media server that is encrypted…

  14. I been using #Nextcloud since 2015, everything working flawlessly. Most importantly privacy is a crucial for these days.

  15. when you learn calDAV, please do a video on the details for us. I installed Syncthing less than 2 days ago and like it – though I made a mistake somehow and all of the cleaning/rearranging I did on one PC got UNDONE by the other when I turned it on. And, I think that deleted at least one photo that I certainly miss.

  16. Honestly, many think that privacy is a right but the truth is it is a previledge to the rich and also a marketing strategy built on capitalizing on our fear of survelliance. Nothing is private and secure. The only way one can be private and secure is by eliniminating technology from ourlives and the people who accepts or can't live without technology.

  17. CalDAV and CardDAV can be provided to Android globally via the app DAVx⁵ (GPL3).
    On Windows, it's all application-side.

Edit: Oh, he does mention DAVx⁵ later on ^_^

  18. You’re depriving Billy Gates of one of his most perverse activities randomly snooping into peoples private lives! He and the Zucker do it frequently
